Sex After Hip Replacement

Many people are concerned with having sex after total hip replacement surgery. The majority of patients can safely resume sexual intercourse after surgery. In general, the time to consider resuming intercourse is when you are back to your normal activities without pain. Below are a few guidelines to keep in mind:

• Less than 90˚ of bending
• Initially you should assume a more passive role
• Avoid extremes of motion
• If you were given hip precautions, maintain those precautions during sexual intercourse
• Consider using pillows for support and comfort
