Recover at Home After Hip Replacement Surgery
Recover at Home After Hip Replacement Surgery

Hip replacement surgery is a very common orthopaedic surgery. It involves replacing portions of a deteriorating hip joint with a synthetic implant so patients are able to move and get back to activities without experiencing pain. Since the first FDA-approved hip replacement in 1969, this surgery has generally been performed on an inpatient basis.1 However, due to recent advancements it is possible to have this surgery and go home the same day.

Allowing a patient to recover at home lessens the chances of post-surgery complications, while also expediting the recovery process dramatically. Even if this surgery is performed on an inpatient basis, minimally invasive techniques have shortened hospital stays tremendously. Abide by these helpful tips for a successful home recovery after hip replacement surgery:

  • Prepare the Home Before Surgery - make sure everything is within reach. Rearrange furniture so it can easily be maneuvered around. If possible, install a shower chair, gripping bar, and/or raised toilet seat in the bathroom.
  • Adhere to a Healthy Diet - it may be recommended to take iron and other vitamin supplements. It is important to drink plenty of fluids and avoid smoking and alcohol. Pre-made meals allow for a healthy and easy option.
  • Take Medication as Prescribed - take medication as directed by the doctor. Also, sharing about other medications such as over-the-counter drugs, supplements, and even vitamins is extremely important.
  • Resume Normal Activities - it is imperative to stay as active as possible, but the key is to not do too much, too soon. Regular communication with the aftercare team is crucial.

Whether discharged directly home or shortly thereafter, most patients will need some assistance. It is hard to predict exactly how long due to the individualized nature of each surgery and each recovery, but it is best to plan for several days or weeks post-surgery. Arrangements should be made before the surgery.

Getting back to a daily routine may also look different depending on individual recovery times and level of activity before surgery. Although recovery times vary, most patients can begin resuming activities between two to eight weeks from surgery and will notice a continued improvement over time. Once the doctor gives the go-ahead, the patient can return to all of their normal activities.
