Am I a Candidate for PRP?

A vast majority of the research studies suggest that for the right candidate, platelet-rich plasma therapy might help accelerate healing of musculoskeletal injury. Many famous athletes have used PRP to speed up their recovery from sports injury and return to their game as soon as possible.

You may be a candidate for platelet rich plasma therapy if you have:

  • Chronic ligament or tendon pain that is interfering with activities of daily living.

  • Early stages of osteoarthritis causing joint pain and stiffness.

  • A longstanding sports injury such as tennis elbow, jumper’s knee, Achilles tendonitis, or rotator cuff pain.

  • Delayed healing after undergoing orthopedic surgery.

  • Tried other nonsurgical treatments such as pain medications, joint aspirations, hyaluronic acid injections, steroid injections, or physical therapy without much success.

Platelet-rich plasma is derived from your own blood. A vial of the obtained blood is placed in a centrifuge machine and spun at very high speeds to form the platelet rich plasma. The PRP is then injected into the site of injury or pain to facilitate repair and healing of damaged tissue. Although the exact mechanism of action is unclear, it is thought that PRP may stimulate pluripotent cells to cause regeneration of tissue such as new ligament, tendon, or cartilage formation. It may also reduce pain signals by altering pain receptors at the site of injury.

Some of the Benefits of Platelet-Rich Plasma Therapy include:

  • Less risk of side effects as platelet rich plasma is obtained from your own blood.

  • Enhances the natural healing process of the body.

  • Conveniently performed in the outpatient setting.

  • Hardly any preparation is necessary before the procedure.

  • Minimal downtime after injection of PRP.

  • Cost effective compared to more invasive procedures.
